Founded in 2009 by Cruz Contreras, The Black Lillies have become one of Americana music’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between genres.
They are mainstay on radio and album sales charts, with a sound that is as powerful in the quieter moments as it is explosive during the jubilant ones. The band’s most recent record, Stranger to Me (2018), features a pared down configuration which has resulted in a bigger, deeper sound built on undeniable chemistry, lush three-part harmonies, and instrumental virtuosity with a funky edge.
The Black Lillies toured nationwide appearing at Stagecoach Festival, Strawberry Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, High Sierra, Dellfest, Pickathon, Luck Reunion, Rhythm and Blooms, Old Settlers, Jazz Fest, MerleFest and more.
After a brief hiatus during the COVID pandemic, Cruz Contreras & The Black Lillies are on the road performing from Contreras' extensive music catalog.
The current lineup includes long time Lillies member Sam Quinn (of the everybodyfields) on vocals and bass, Jake Smith on electric guitar, and Ben McLaughlin on drums and vocals, creating what Contreras describes as a "cosmic country" sound.
