Malignancy is an East Coast extreme metal group with a lethal yet infectious sound rooted in the kinetic blast beats and unorthodox songwriting typical to New York technical death metal. Early works like 1998's Intrauterine Cannibalism leaned heavily into grindcore, while later efforts such as Inhuman Grotesqueries (2007) and Discontinued (2024) took a broader, more technically ambitious approach to the genre.
Malignancy was founded in Yonkers in 1992 by vocalist Danny Nelson and guitarist Javier Velez and has shown remarkable resilience amidst a flurry of personnel changes. Despite these challenges, Nelson and Ron Kachnic, who replaced Velez in 1994, remain the band's sole constant members. The group issued three demos before securing a deal with United Guttural in 1998. Their debut full-length effort, Intrauterine Cannibalism, was released the following year and focused on bludgeoning brutal death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. Ignorance Is Bliss, a compilation of their early demos, arrived in 2001, with the EP Cross Species Transmutation appearing in 2003.
Malignancy inked a deal with Willowtip Records before the release of 2007's death/grind-forward Inhuman Grotesqueries. The dystopian Eugenics, a concept album exploring the evolution and devolution of a fictional future society, arrived in 2012 and was augmented two years later by the EP Epilogue, which completed the story. A re-recording of the group's debut long-player, Intrauterine Cannibalism, appeared in 2019, followed in 2024 by Discontinued, an assured set of intricate technical brutality with post-apocalyptic undercurrents. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
