Konyikeh creates soulful music with striking lyrics and a beautiful, instantly memorable voice. Konyikeh grew up surrounded by music, hearing everything from opera to her mum’s Destiny’s Child CDs in the house, trips to see classical music at the BBC Proms, and the beautiful harmonies of traditional African music from the Kenyan Boys Choir on long journeys in the car to her favourite violin shop, an instrument which she plays proficiently after many years of study at the prestigious Guildhall: “It was all to really expand my palate,” she explains. In more recently years Konyikeh has explored her Jamaican and Cameroonian heritage through reggae, dancehall and Afrobeats, alongside an insatiable consumption of Hip Hop and Soulful music in all its forms.
