JASSS is the performing name of Silvia Jiménez Alvarez, a Spanish producer, DJ, and sound designer known for her industrial-tinged techno. Based in Berlin, JASSS built up a reputation as a DJ on the city's vibrant electronic circuit before releasing her first singles in 2016. She made her full-length debut a year later with the dark-hued Weightless on the iDEAL label. Evolving from the gritty avant-garde of her early work, JASSS became even more unpredictable on 2021's A World of Service, released by Ostgut Ton, which veered from visceral hyperpop to trip-hop and introduced Alvarez's vocals into the mix. She returned in 2024 with "Machine Food" from London's fabric Originals series.
Born and raised in Northern Spain, Alvarez started DJ'ing in her early twenties. During a stint living in the Netherlands, she began to experiment as a producer, warping field recordings into textured electronic pieces. She moved to Berlin in 2011 where her multiple pursuits began to coalesce. As JASSS, she worked her way through the city's DJ scene, then released a series of 2016 singles on the Mannequin label. The tough industrial sound she introduced on "Mother" and "Es Complicado" was expanded on the 2017 full-length Weightless and helped established JASSS as a touring artist outside of Berlin.
After a 2020 12" for AD 93's Whities series, she introduced a new phase with 2021's wild and genre-reticent A World of Service. Her first outing for Germany's Ostgut Ton label, the album featured several vocals tracks along with blistering instrumentals that moved in multiple new directions. Next up was a remix of Canadian producer Nathan Micay's track "To the God Named Dream" in late 2023 followed in 2024 by "Machine Food," her contribution to the fabric Originals compilation In Pursuit of Pleasure. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
